Discover Sajj Mediterranean (San Mateo)

If you're ever in the mood for a flavorful Mediterranean meal, Sajj Mediterranean (San Mateo) is a fantastic choice. Nestled at 251 E 3rd Ave, San Mateo, CA 94401, this cozy spot offers a vibrant mix of traditional Mediterranean dishes, blending fresh ingredients with rich, aromatic spices. From the moment you walk in, you'll feel the warm and welcoming atmosphere, ideal for casual meals with friends or a quick lunch after a busy day.

The menu at Sajj Mediterranean is a beautiful representation of Mediterranean cuisine, featuring dishes inspired by regions like Lebanon, Syria, and Turkey. Whether you're craving shawarma, falafel, or grilled kebabs, you can expect every dish to be packed with bold, authentic flavors. The quality of the ingredients is evident in every bite-fresh vegetables, tender meats, and delicious, house-made sauces.

One of the standout items on the menu is the signature Sajj wrap, a perfect combination of crispy flatbread filled with your choice of protein, fresh vegetables, and a variety of savory toppings. The garlic sauce is a fan favorite, offering just the right amount of creaminess and flavor to complement the dish. It’s no wonder why many locals consider this their go-to spot for Mediterranean food in the area.

Another must-try is the hummus, which is incredibly smooth and perfectly seasoned. Whether paired with pita or served alongside a fresh salad, it’s clear that this isn’t your average store-bought dip. The Mediterranean bowls are also a hit, offering a customizable option with protein, grains, and all the fresh toppings you can imagine. Whether you're in the mood for a refreshing tabbouleh or a hearty portion of roasted vegetables, Sajj Mediterranean ensures there's something for everyone.

For those seeking a lighter option, the salads are fresh, filling, and incredibly flavorful. The fattoush salad, with its crispy pita chips, tangy dressing, and crunchy vegetables, is a delightful choice. It’s a great side or even a meal if you're looking to keep things light without compromising on taste. And, if you're into something a bit more substantial, the lamb kofta is a crowd-pleaser, boasting smoky, grilled flavors that perfectly capture the essence of Mediterranean grilling techniques.

Service at Sajj Mediterranean (San Mateo) is another reason to visit. The staff is friendly and efficient, always happy to recommend their favorite dishes or explain the different options available. It's clear that they take pride in their food, and it shows in the level of care they put into each meal. On a recent visit, I had the pleasure of chatting with the chef, who shared insights into the careful sourcing of their ingredients, all chosen for their exceptional quality and authenticity.

In addition to the food, the location itself adds to the experience. The interior is cozy, with a relaxed vibe that makes it easy to enjoy a meal at your own pace. There’s also the option of ordering to-go, making it a convenient choice for anyone on the move. Whether you’re looking for a quick lunch or a leisurely dinner, Sajj Mediterranean has created a welcoming environment for all types of diners.

The prices are reasonable for the quality and portion sizes, which is another reason why it’s become a favorite in the San Mateo area. You get excellent value for your money, especially considering the attention to detail in every dish. The menu also features plenty of vegetarian and vegan-friendly options, making it a great choice for anyone with dietary restrictions or preferences.

Sajj Mediterranean is more than just a restaurant; it’s a local gem that brings people together through delicious, authentic Mediterranean food. • Wonderful way to have a quick meal that is nearly all gluten free. All of the items behind the glass have V and/or GF, so I don't have to memorize ahead of time their pdf of allergens. Loved that the toppings were not additional cost, except for two. Only thing I was not a fan of was how it seems like there could be a lot of waste in the way things are served. The bowls are compostable, but the cups and utensils -- unclear what to do with those. Having silverware and cups that are washed would be less wasteful for eat-in customers (or have better signage by the compost/trash what goes where)

  • Went in to pickup a quick lunch. Got the steak wrap which was solid. All toppings are included so you can choose what you like. Could use more spicy sauce options (they just had spicy tahini). Felt a little brave and tried the chocolate hummus and that was clearly a good call! It's very dense and heavy. But, the cinnamon coated chips it comes with is the perfect combination. Heat place for solid, flavor packed and healthy grub!

  • I like how you can custom your salad. Steak salad with Cubed beets, eggplant & topped with tzatziki, hummus and garlic spread was delicious. Service was very friendly. Portion is on the larger side it was super filling. Would have given 5 stars if they toned down the music. It was too loud. We could not have a decent conversation without straining or voices or constantly having to repeat ourselves.

  • Service at this location is fantastic. The food quality is similar to what you'd expect from Cava or Naya on the east coast. It's good for that Mediterranean fix. The downside is the cost. Around 16 bucks for a bowl is tough to stomach. They do add a nice lentil soup with your meal though and have some interesting sauces / dips. Plenty of seating in there too.

  • This location is the best in the bay. The food is tasty, staff is amazing, and I love that complimentary soup they give. This place is 10/10

  • They have a few restaurants in San Francisco as well, and every single one is absolutely fantastic. This restaurant is a chipotle-style Mediterranean place where you can choose a base of salad, wrap, pita bread, or rice bowl, and then add many different toppings. The service is good too! Fast and tasty.

  • Phenomenal portion size and flavors, very kind staff (one time they were closing early, so they offered me a free big tub of lentil soup so it wouldn't go to waste!) They pickle stuff perfectly, and I can't get enough of their garlic spread.
